Marathon Project Director held an informational meeting on the Sombrero Beach Road wastewater/stormwater project May 2nd at the Marathon Garden Club. She was joined by Weiler Engineer Ed Castle, GlobeTec Project Manager Alex Carstens, City Manager Mike Puto, Deputy City Manager C. J. Geotis, Mayor Chris Bull, Vice Mayor Mearns, and Councilwoman Tempest.

This project will include wastewater, reclaimed water, and stormwater systems. These systems will be constructed on the city's right of way. GlobeTec is contracted to do this job. They will be installing piping and vacuum valve pits along Sombrero Beach Road. After completion of this project, FDOT will be doing the Sombrero Beach Road improvement project.

During this city project the roads will be dug up and some disruption will be present. There will always be one lane open controlled by a flagman.

After the short presentation by Susie Thomas, questions and answers were taken from the public. The biggest item of contention was the fact that the city will not replace anything removed from the right of way required for this project.

The Marathon Near Shore Waters Advisory Committee met May 4th at the library. After the Pledge of Allegiance, the committee reviewed and approved the minutes of the last meeting. Photos are available for a limited time at http://MarathonJournal.US/journal/press/index.htm.

George Garrett provided an update for the vessel removal process for Boot Key Harbor. He stated that FEMA appeared to be on board now. Money should be forthcoming. 25 derelicts have already been removed, and refund from FEMA will be requested. About 12 more derelicts need removed. Additionally, other derelicts have been identified for removal post-Wilma. Garrett provided updates on the canal and trap cleanups.

The annual Boot Key Harbor cleanup is scheduled for June 4th, starting at 10:00 AM at the city marina. Other activities are scheduled at Dockside.

The installation of the new mooring field still has a few hurdles to overcome at the state cabinet level. May 31st Deputy City Manager C. J. Geotis and Harbormaster Richard Tanner will be in Tallahassee to address these issues. The Florida Department of Environmental Protect may become involved in a position favorable to the city's new mooring field. Meanwhile, Tanner is working on a third tier rate structure for permanent year-around liveaboards.

33rd Street boat ramp will be closed during the May boat races. Alternative ramps were discussed for other boaters to use. Councilman Pete Worthington emailed us to inform us that the 33rd Street boat ramp will not be closed, as was first reported. His email stated, It will be opened to the public all week during the races due to the lack of other public ramps available.

The Dodge Lake Ramp reconstruction and repair near Aviation Boulevard is progressing steadily.

The committee asked the question about the possibility that the Heritage Trail construction interfering with commercial fishing operations.

A handout was presented detailing possible committee topics for future consideration. Among other items listed, some interesting ones were a wireless internet service for Boot Key Harbor, and code enforcement concerning near shore waters surrounding Marathon Keys.

The next meeting was scheduled for June 1st at the Marathon Public Library starting at 6:30 PM. Generally, the committee will meet the first Thursday of each month unless a holiday is on that date.

The Middle Keys Community Land Trust Board of Directors held their regular monthly meeting at Marathon's Gulfside Shopping Center Exit Realty conference room May 8th.

The President's report included a state legislative update on several affordable housing issues. The Administrator's report covered the 2004 tax return and a QuickBooks update. The Treasurer's report presented the proposed initial credit card policy.

Islamorada's Woods Corner project has the money in place and prevelopment done. The preliminary site plans need to be done next.

The Islamorada Hotel project depends on village action.

There was discussion of how best to pursue an Islamorada-like partnership with the City of Marathon. Discussions closed out with topics on accessory dwelling units and mortgage credit certificate.

The Marathon City Council met May 9th at the government center. The first order of business was Mayor Bull presenting a proclamation to Eagle Scout Vinson Fox. Photos will be available for a short period at http://MarathonJournal.US/journal/press/index.htm. He put in all the training and exercise equipment at the Community Park.

Deputy City Manager C. J. Geotis presented the City Manager’s report. There was a marina update, life insurance provider change, and auditing services request for proposal updates among other items.

Geotis reported that the city’s marina has not received any of the allotted subsidy money and is ahead about $6,000. He requested $25,000 to install floating docks on the eastern side of the basin. That request was approved.

Clara Perrine replaced the old life insurance provider who wanted to raise rates to a Fort Dearborn provider for less than before the old life insurance provider’s proposed increase. This life insurance is a benefit to retain city employees.

City Project Manager Susie Thomas and Weiler Engineer Ed Castle presented wastewater and stormwater updates. Everything is almost finished on US1 oceanside, regarding reviews, preliminary plans, and surveying. Contractor GlobeTec bid came in under the original estimate. The Sombrero Beach Road wastewater/stormwater project groundbreaking is May 15th, 10:00 AM roadside just before the high school at the former Marathon Manor entrance.

Peter Rosasco asked permission to put out a Request for Proposal [RFP] for a new auditing services firm. The council told him to go ahead.

Rotary International is hosting this year’s bash at the bridge May 18, 19, and 20th. This will actually be at the new amphitheatre at the Community Park. Permitting was requested and approved.

The Parks and Recreation Committee report included a pitch for a batting cage for the Community Park. Kevin Woodland has been pushing for this. He helped Acting Committee Chair Chris Gratton with the presentation. The cost would be in the range of $7,000 to $10,000, depending on what items are purchased. The council approved the concept of building the facility but not supplying it with pitching machines and other related equipment.

The consent agenda included several lot dedications and the minutes for April 25th.

The council then took up further discussion of the 53rd Street situation with the parking by Publix and the blind spot at the right corner of 53rd Street and Sombrero Boulevard. The November RFP will include this area, which will help to make the area safer. Sheriff’s Office Capt. Peryam reported some enforcement actions. He suggested some passive constraints to prevent parking near the sides of the street.

Councilman Worthington said that the city is less than 3 months from the LDR deadline. He said that the city has to speed up the process, and zoning issues should be considered first. Councilman Pinkus concurred. City Attorney John Herin followed-up that former Planning Director Gail Kenson did review the LDRs, and the city is ready to proceed. Mayor Bull will schedule meetings. The first one will be May 22nd or 30th. The details of the meeting will be published soon.

Councilman Worthington requested a possible addition to the Comprehensive Plan amendment on FLUM changes. The council decided not to pursue that course, but allow such changes through normal processes.

Not all owners agreed to the less expensive layout of the proposed new road that would be Avenue K, so back to square one. The more expensive approach will have to be used, which will cost all the owners way more money. The City Project Manager Susie Thomas tried to get all the owners on board in an effort to save them money, but to no avail.

Ordinance 2006-07 amended the code dealing with the definition of a room, hotel, or motel. City Biologist Wendy Dyer, acting in place of former Planning Direct Gail Kenson, made the presentation. The ordinance would permit developers to convert existing floor area within that structure up to 3 bedrooms. Cheryl Wilcox asked for clarity of the language, and City Attorney John Herin modified the ordinance to make the purpose of the ordinance clearer.

Ordinance 2006-09 amended Ordinance 3.12.01 that dealt with the consent to the inclusion of a specified area of the city in the Marathon Municipal Service Taxing Unit [MSTU]. The change was to substitute the City of Marathon for the FKAA. Project Manger Susie Thomas doesn’t want the MSTU repealed. She wanted the MSTU to run its course to the 07/08 budget. Council agreed.

Ordinance 2006-08 amended the Land Use Map for property at 2146 Overseas Highway. This property is part of former Sundance RV Park. The park is currently empty. Zoning was changed from Urban Residential Mobile Home to Mixed Use. This will allow for affordable housing to be built on site. Craig Company Barbara Mitchell, owner’s agent, made their presentation. The site was significantly damaged. All existing damaged units are non-compliant and can’t be rehabilitated even if possible prior to the hurricane. Councilman Pete Worthington stated in a email to Marathon Florida Keys Journal, "And the Sundance Trailer Park had a change to the FLUM map in the past. The change that passed the first reading on Tues night was a zoning change, not a land use change. The MU zoning would be consistent with the MU on the land use map."

The Knights Key Corporation development agreement and amendment to a major conditional use was continued to May 23rd.

The Chappie’s Restaurant major conditional use to develop the restaurant, swimming pool, deck/patio area, and parking lot at Kyle Way West on Knights Key near mile-marker 47 was approved. Craig Company Tom Williams addressed a last minute resident request to continue this item. This resident wanted a gate. If the council permitted the gate, the applicant would be happy to comply. John Herin stated that a gate could be permitted under specific state guidelines or abandon right of way. Abandon the right of way would not likely get the approval of every resident. John Chaplin spoke of trying to satisfy all the residents. Continuance was denied. Cay Clubs supported the development. The major conditional use was approved.

David Addison and Carolyn Gautreaux’s appeal of Publix’s alcoholic beverage license that includes only beer, wine, and liquor was continued to June 27th.

The Marathon Hotel Partnership development agreement was amended to assign ownership of the property to Peebles Inc. This property is located at 13351 Overseas Highway.

Resolution 2006-052 authorized the city to enter into a construction management agreement with B. W. Sprague.

Resolution 2006-054 authorized the city to enter into a project agreement with B. W. Sprague.

Resolution 2006-064 approved the interlocal agreement with the county for a joint project to construct a city hall and a library on city property yet to be determined.

Resolution 2006-066 adopted land acquisition procedures for the city’s Land Acquisition Advisory Committee.

Resolution 2006-067 authorized the city to enter a project agreement with Weiler Engineering Corporation for engineering services for marina improvements for $60,660.

Resolution 2006-068 authorized the city to enter into a loan agreement with the state Department of Environmental Protection State Revolving Fund Loan Program. This money is to obtain pre-construction loans for the wastewater project.

Resolution 2006-069 authorized the city to enter into a loan agreement with the state Department of Environmental Protection State Revolving Fund Loan Program. This money is to obtain pre-construction loans for the stormwater project.

Draft charter amendments language was considered. A workshop will be scheduled for June sometime.

Curry Hammock State Park received an affordable housing allocation for one workforce housing unit.

Construction manager-at-risk request for qualifications should not to be confused with construction manager. This is for the city hall/library project. Once plans mature, the construction manager-at-risk would execute the plans.

Council comments were made. Councilwoman Tempest provided a FIRM update. Vice Mayor Mearns reported on save old seven [SOS] efforts to save the Old Seven Mile Bridge servicing Pigeon Key. Councilman Pinkus stated that the council should partner with MKCLT. Pinkus also asked about the status on the yacht club lease for land and bay bottom. Councilman Worthington agreed on the affordable housing priority and asked about the status of the Carlisle project. Mayor Bull addressed affordable housing priorities. He also clarified the city’s RV “moratorium” in that the dates were the reason not for any specific project like Sundance RV Park.

The meeting concluded very close to 11:00 PM.

Marathon Code Board convened May 10th at the Sheriff's Hangar second-floor training room. Chris Gratton was elected Chairman, and Glenn Robinson was selected at Vice Chairman. Photos are available for a short period of time at http://MarathonJournal.US/journal/press/index.htm.

Biza Corporation, owner of Unit #E16 at 1361 overseas Highway is still not in compliance according to Marathon Inspector Michael Storm. The violation was a new park model mobile home installed with an addition being constructed without permits. Attorneys Andrew Tobin and Steve Williams explained that the owner was trying to come into compliance, but the delay was due to a contractor backlog. The board agreed to continue this until the next meeting.

Larry Breedlove, owner of Driftwood Marina, was charged with illegal land clearing and placement of fill along with removing high hammock vegetation on Breedlove's vacant lot bordering US1 and abutting Curry Hammock State Park hammocks. Inspector Cynthia McPherson presented the city's case along with City Biologist Wendy Dyer. The board refused a continuance request and found the owner guilty. Breedlove was given 60 days to comply.

The case against Mr. Dunlap was withdrawn. The city said that he was mitigating his illegal vegetative removal.

Jesse Harris, owner of lot at 11722 2nd Avenue Ocean, was charged with having an accessory structure on the property without first having a principal structure and no permits. Inspector Michael Storm presented the city's case. Mr. Harris requested a continuance, which was denied. Harris was found guilty and given 60 days to comply.

The Marathon Parks and Recreation Committee held its meeting May 11th at the public library. Pictures are available for a short time at http://MarathonJournal.US/journal/press/index.htm.

Chairman Chris Gratton gave an update about the batting cage proposal presented to the council earlier this week. Gratton informed the committee that Kevin Woodland helped present the proposal. The batting cage project needs scaled down to a facility only. It should be similar to the high school batting cage to include a cement slab, artificial grass, home plate, poles, netting, pitcher protective screen, and needs to be protected from hurricanes. Batting machines were not considered, as that was a liability issue for the city. That would not preclude the baseball leagues providing their own batting machines. The batting cage would be located on the north end of the Community Park baseball field near the US1 buffer. Irrigation might have to be rerouted. The current ball field lighting should be adequate to light a batting cage. Parks and Recreation Supervisor Jimmy Schmidt said that there might be grant money available. The committee thought that the project would be under $5,000. The contractor must be licensed and insured. Schmidt said that he would work with Project Manager Susie Thomas in coordinating details. Hopefully, the committee submit a detailed plan at the next council meeting.

During summer, the committee meetings will not be scheduled for June and July, unless circumstances call for a special call meeting. Coco Plum Beach enhancements might require a special call meeting. Meetings after the summer season could be scheduled every other month. The committee wants to see how having the summer off will work before making that decision.

Schmidt informed the committee that Tom Wright resigned from the committee, as his law practice was taking more time.

The swimming pool referendum language will be very important. The committee discussed scaling back the overall project. The benefits of having a swimming pool were discussed as well.

The short meeting adjourned just before 7:00 PM.

The Planning Commission met at the Sheriff's Hangar second-floor training room May 15th. They considered a fairly normal agenda. Their actions are predictable. Fortunately, they advise the city council only. The most important duty is to take and report citizen input, which they don't do well if at all. The council hardly ever knows what the commission is up to or even understand their thinking. The commission is a waste, but is necessary.

The Overseas Village Home Owners Association met at Unit 4A May 15th. Residents, directors, and children gathered and discussed issues about their community.

The President's and Treasurer's reports were heard, and the minutes of the last meeting approved.

Changes to the association's documents were discussed. Various repairs were considered. A few complaints were presented and dealt with in a fair manner.

The next meeting will consider some issues that all residents must address. That meeting is scheduled for June 14th.

Every May the City of Marathon hosts motorcycles, rock bands, and super speedboats. May 18th, 19th, 20th, and 21st will see music, fast boats, and choppers invade the town. The dry pits are at the airport, the bands are at the the Community Park Amphitheatre, and the races are at the beginning of the Seven Mile Bridge, both old and new. The website with all the information is located at http://www.keysoffshore.com. That site states, "Thursday, May 18th, 2006 Sunrise: 6:39 A.M., Sunset: 8:03 P.M. 6:00 P.M. Marathon Rotary hosts "Bash at the Bridge" – Opening Festival at the City of Marathon Amphitheatre – Invited Guests include: The Florida Straits Band, The Edgar Winter Band and Kansas. Edgar Winter Web Site – http://www.EdgarWinter.com. Fireworks Display provided by the City of Marathon"

Today boats started arriving at the airport and setting up. The bands were turning up for the Bash at the Bridge being held at the Marathon Community Park Amphitheatre. The roar of motorcycles fills the warm air with the music wafting up to a marvelous sunset. The City of Marathon has a great party going on. Let's join the fun!

Marathon super speedboat races, concerts, and motorcycles graced May 19th with bright sun, fun, and super music. Pictures are available for a short time at http://MarathonJournal.US/journal/press/index.htm.

The dry pits at the airport saw preparations, some relaxing, and a few people admiring the machinery.

The new Marathon Community Park Amphitheatre is impressive. The sound quality is very good. John Bartus played between sets of 72 Nova and Rick Derringer. The crowds grew in size slowly but steadily through the late afternoon into the early evening.

The concessions were on par for a typical concert. The lemon and key lime drink was really cold and good. I had two.

At about 7:00 PM sirens signaled the parade of boats and motorcycles down US 1 to the west and then back again.

All this fun in the sun, fireworks, and there is still Saturday and Sunday.

The Marathon Offshore Grand Prix Festival presented by Cay Clubs went racing May 20th. Our photographer, Tony S., got some really nice photographs. You will be able to see them for a short period of time at http://MarathonJournal.US/journal/press/index.htm.  His camera has the date and time set wrong. We apologize for that.

The VIPs hobnobbed at Tranquility Bay Resort at 2600 Overseas Highway. This resort was formerly the Buccaneer Resort.

The race results are posted at the Fountain Powerboats trailer at the airport dry pits.

The Motorcycle Show was held at the Lighthouse Cay Club Resort at 19 Sombrero Boulevard. This resort used to be known as Sombrero Resort.

Marathon hosted the third evening of concerts called "Bash at the Bridge - The Main Event." All three evenings of music under the stars have been held at the new Community Park Amphitheatre. The artists playing this night were Jonny Maddox and the Fantasy Ban, Mark Farner, and, of course, the concert host, our very own John Bartus and his group.

The evening was topped off once again by a fireworks display the City of Marathon provided.

The last day [May 21st] of the Marathon Offshore Grand Prix Festival saw the early afternoon races completed in bright sunshine and gentle winds. Fans watched the races from Sunset Park or Sunrise Park, depending on your preference. VIPs watched from Tranquility Bay. Results are posted at the airport dry pits on the Fountain Powerboats trailer. The Key West Citizen published the results from Saturday, and certainly will have the Sunday results in Monday's newspaper. The Keynoter will most likely publish the results as well.

The racing village continued to be open to the public all day at the Marathon Airport.

The four-day weekend event ended gracefully at the awards presentation. Tranquility Bay Resort hosted this final event.

In the last 4 years of this event, it has only grown and become more popular. The next 4 years will certainly be most exciting. The Middle Keys economy certainly benefits, and the fans have a ton of fun in the sun and the warm waters of paradise in the fantastic Florida Keys and the great City of Marathon.

The Florida Keys Airport Task Force met May 22nd at the second-floor Sheriff's Aviation Hangar training room. The task force had to meet here, since the airport is being renovated.

Commissioner David Rice welcomed everybody. His opening remarks included an announcement of good news. He spoke about the terminal renovations and the second draft of a Delta agreement.

Marathon Vice Mayor Marjie Mearns was in attendance as well as various members of the task force.

Peter Horton, county manager for the Key West airport, and the Boyd Group contractor Mike Mooney made presentations.

Delta will provide a daily flight Atlanta to Marathon and then Marathon to Atlanta. An extra round trip will be provided over the weekend in addition to the daily run. Gulfstream associated with Continental, United, and Northwest will run 2 round trips to Tampa and another 2 round trips to Fort Lauderdale.

The Risk Abatement Fund would guarantee $500,000 for Delta and $300,000 for Gulfstream if required.

The total seats weekly would be 1,704. The airlines will actually risk more than the fund would cover. For example, Delta will have over $4,000,000 invested.

US Airways is not currently interested.

The terminal is being upgraded with 25% currently completed. The terminal is being configured to Transportation Security Agency [TSA] standards. Monies to assist in the renovations have come from various sources: $800,000 from insurance, $300,000 from FEMA, $300,000 from FAA, and the FAA provided $750,00 for TSA improvements and another $750,000 for a generator and raised vault for same.

Ground support and logistics improvements are coming along well.

In the area of terminal services, Dunkin' Donuts has expressed an interest. Ground transport will need to improve as well.

TSA should be ready for the November startup date.

Jonathan Weinshank, Monroe County Manager Communications and Website, will be used to coordinate promotion and information about the benefits provided by regional jet service.

The next meeting is tentatively scheduled for August 21st at 1:30 PM located at either the Sheriff's Aviation Hangar training room or the Marathon airport.

Former city council candidate Don Kenny is leaving the Florida Keys. In a meeting with Don Kenny May 22nd, he told the story of his decision to finally leave paradise.

He can't afford paradise anymore, but he can travel. Don is a disabled veteran, coping as best as he can. When the opportunity came up to travel to various national parks, he couldn't pass that up.

Don has a friend going with him to assist if needed. There are many of us that hate to see Don leave, but we all understand. Fair seas and following winds, Don. Be good.

The Marathon City Council held its meeting May 23rd at the government center. Mayor Chris Bull presented proclamations for Hurricane Preparedness Week and National Missing Children’s Day. Fire Chief Hans Wagner spoke about hurricane preparedness in accepting the proclamation.

Under the city manager’s report, Mike Puto talked about the Boot Key Harbor cleanup scheduled for June 4th. The event starts at 8:00 AM. The help will have some food and drink at Dockside and the city marina.

Resolution 2006-074 assigned the development agreement for 13351 Overseas Highway from Marathon Hotel Partnership to the Peebles Corporation. This was taken off the consent agenda and moved to the beginning of the meeting, so that Jeff Pinkus could recuse himself and Marjie Mearns having to leave temporarily to see her grandson.

Change order for Gonzalez Landscaping contract addition was approved for cleaning the marina facilities for $500 per month.

Monroe County interlocal meeting room agreement was approved.

Planning Commission vacancy due to Don Vasil resignation needs to be filled. Position has been advertised. City applications are available at city hall, and June 1st is the cutoff date.

Marlin Bay Yacht Club development agreement continuances need to be noticed again. Sandler at Greater Marathon Bay has withdrawn the application.

City staffers are moving into the Event’s Field city hall trailers this week. City Manager Mike Puto will be moving over there as well as Deputy City Manager C. J. Geotis.

Under citizen comments, John Whalton from Grassy Key spoke about all the staff departures. Why have we lost all these people? Are other staffers not happy? He also spoke about the Jolly Roger RV Park evictions. He was concerned about what further actions could be taken to fix this problem.

Kevin Morse from Jolly Roger bemoans the fact that he is an endangered species. He is having trouble getting a demolition permit.

Resolution 2006-080 provided FIRM $10,000 to help with its insurance reduction and reform efforts. Councilwoman Marilyn Tempest spoke to this issue. City Attorney John Herin asked whether this money would go directly to FIRM. Tempest said that the money would go to FIRM.

Vice Mayor Mearns returned at 7:20 PM. Councilman Worthington arrived late at 7:25 PM. They were attending to graduation of a grandson and daughter respectively.

Second reading, Ordinance 2006-07 amended the definition of room, hotel, or motel in the code. This would allow existing adjacent room square footage to be used for a unit in the same dwelling. Barbara Mitchell of the Craig Company asked if this would be an as-of-right or for council approval of a conditional use process. Conditional use process must be used according to city attorney.

Second reading, Ordinance 2006-09 amended Ordinance 03-12-01 consenting to the inclusion of a specified area in the Marathon Municipal Service Taxing Unit. Instead of funds coming to FKAA, those funds will come to the city directly.

Ordinance 2006-08 amended the Land Use Map from URM to MU for 2146 Overseas Highway formerly Sundance RV Park now owned by Sombrero Beach Partners.

The Knights Key Corporation development agreement and amendment to a major conditional use was continued to the June 13th council meeting.

Resolution 2006-073 approved a James Chaplin request for a major conditional use permit authorizing the development of a restaurant, swimming pool, deck, and patio area. This was a consent agenda item.

Resolution 2006-075 extends a grant agreement to July 1, 2007. This grant from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection is for sand replacement and preparation of a beach management plant. That plan would make the city eligible for FEMA funding in future hurricane losses.

Resolution 2006-077 was about a Monroe County interlocal agreement for the optional gas tax revenues of $273,733.38 per year. Councilman Worthington thinks that the city is not getting its fair share based on what other municipalities get. This was continued to May 30th to try to get city’s fair share.

Resolution 2006-078 approved and accepted a land dedication from Seas the Day FL Keys. This was a consent agenda item.

Resolution 2006-079 authorized the city manager to hire a human resources director. Tempest voted no.

A special call meeting for referendum issues and possibly the swimming pool referendum will be June 6th at 6:30 PM at the Sheriff’s Aviation Hangar second-floor training room.

What's Happening! Marlin Bay Yacht Club is housed in offices next to the 3rd Generation Plumbing office near 35th Street. We took pictures and posted them. Several efforts were made to interview anyone at this Sandler at Greater Marathon Bay company. To date, no one has returned the invite for an interview or called.  This is typical of a company famous for evicting city citizens. Currently the old Gulfstream and fishery property has activity. Seawalls are being built with the help of a large crane with an American flag flying atop the machine. Of course, all the veterans that lived there near 37th Street and Louisa are gone, having been evicted.

After occasional turbulences through the years, the City of Marathon's staff has just gotten better with the departure of Harry DeLashmutt, formerly Ports Manager, Gail Kenson, formerly Planning Director, and Cindy Echlund, formerly City Clerk. Harry was a loose canon. He wasn't good with the public and even worse with his employees. Gail was a roadblock to any real progress on workforce housing. She wasn't very good with the general public either, unless you were a high-priced developer. Cindy represents the worst of the few staffers who believed that they could outwait any council member or city manager. She was an elitist who thought she knew all the answers from city hall to her very own homeowner association. How wrong she was!

Two articles have appeared in the Marathon Free Press about the American Legion Post 154. I am a lifetime member. I go there to be with veterans and like-minded people. I enjoy the scheduled events. A silly internal squabble over a fishing tournament somehow became news fodder. To those officers and members involved, shame on you. Use some common sense and get along. The Free Press should know better. Shame on them too!

Miscellany: http://www.sfrcv.com/ explains how a city saved money and maintained 50% + 1 voting without runoffs. This is particularly important as Marathon's City Council contemplates changing the way voters elect council members. Citizens are served best by maintaining a 50% + 1 format. Plus the process must be easy for everyone to run for local elected offices. Right now, only about 1,200 to 2,000 [in the best of times] vote out of about 6,100 registered voters. Low voter turnouts are amazing, considering the cost of this freedom from our military veterans. Even worse, is that only about 50% of Marathon's citizens are even registered.

VA Entitlements [article from http://spaces.msn.com/maniac7777/ ]

When I joined the Navy in 1970, I was promised that the Navy would take care of me and mine. This was especially the case, if you made a career out of the service. I did that for over 25 years, until I retired in late 1995.

All along those 25 years, several armed conflicts, wars, and other actions, I was continually promised by one and all that the service would take care of its own. That is not necessarily the case.

First, you have people who begrudge service members their entitlements and services for which service people worked, died, and were wounded for. I say that we earned it. We were promised this as one enticement to put our lives on the line for our country. So any complaints to the contrary are irrelevant.

Secondly, roadblocks and bureaucratic land mines are placed in service members' way to just get minimal services and entitlements. This should not be the case. Obviously, we need to weed out the very few cheaters, but the great majority of us deserve timely and quality services.

I have several disabilities that are service connected. I had to fight and continue to do so to get services and entitlements to which I am due and have earned. I have finally got 50% disability, but should have 100% because I can no longer work. I will continue to fight to get what I am owed.

I shouldn't have to do this, but it is another price service members must endure.

Finally: Did you know that Missouri's state bird is the Bluebird? The flower is the White Hawthorn blossom. The tree is the Flowering Dogwood. The capital is Jefferson City. Kitty Talk
These journals are dedicated to Kitty GreyCat's spirit. She is at RainBow Bridge now along with her human friends, Leo and Doris. We all loved you, Kitty! Click the cat graphic to visit her Memorial page. Kitty born June 6, 1982. Died July 9, 1997. Please use our email form linked below to make suggestions or offer praise. Now, really, the cats have thoughts and meows that are badly interpreted by a human for publication here. So believe what you will, but enjoy nonetheless. All complaints, flames, and such like will end up in the litter box! >^..^<

Orange TomCat that Kitty liked!Ebony: Human bean used his camera thing and got a moving picture of Abby trying to clean me up, when I never asked for no cleanup. Abby starts out all motherly, but she ends up biting me and making me mad and all.  >^..^<

Abby & Ebony star in their own short, very short movie...

Abby: I not neither bother you. You bother me after all. At least I'm not tied up to an old plumeria tree trying to pretend to be a great lizard hunter. You sit out there with human bean's brother meowing about nothing at all. You having all the fun, while I have to run hide to keep from getting nasty flea stuff on me or get my ears cleaned out. That nasty feeling. Cat ears should be left alone. So I got dirty cat ears? What the problem? >^..^<
Ebony: Abby, you infected with something. Ear mites maybe? Whatever. Stay away from me. I lead a more interesting life than you anyway. I go outside. You only go out once in a while. You a sacredly cat. I go with human bean on rides. Why once this month we got to Easy Does It Barbershop where I was a star. I even got milk. You not ever do that. >^..^<
Abby: I rather sleep at human bean feet under the covers than go out. I take too long to get used to the car and stuff. I got nerves, you know. You always going out and coming back in and then going out all the time. Over and over. Can't you make up your mind? >^..^<
Ebony:
Abby, actually, I have a mind! You all skittish with the thunder and lightning and noises. You hide under the bed covers. I might be scared, but I brave it out in the living room. >^..^<
Abby: Human bean said you were on the toilet seat. That not a good place to hide. I hide good places that be warm and dark and not scarily at all. >^..^<
Ebony: Abby, we both saw you smell a banana peel. Tuna fish juice way better than banana peel. >^..^<
Abby:
Ebony, you should go traveling with human bean and his brother again and leaf me alone. I am going to stop being so nice to you. I hissed at you once this month and plan on hissing at you a lot more from now on. You certainly deserve a good hissing. >^..^<
Ebony: I got some hissing right here for you. See this big black paw? O! There go a lizard and another one. Let's go get them, Abby. Yuck, that lizard is stuck to your teeth and fang. How do you screw hunting lizards up is beyond me. >^..^<
Abby: At least I nose what to do in an empty and dry bathtub. I play cat hockey with paper wads. They hard to get out of the goal once they go in. That be the little drain thing for you nosey human beans what got nothing better to do than read these silly meowing things. >^..^<
Ebony: I was 10 this month. I am so old and tired and certainly aggravated with you. >^..^<
Abby: Ebony, you is old for sure. That belly of yours drag on the floor. You know what? I pawed at human bean's cell phone the other day not nosing what it was. You got to paw stuff carefully what you know nothing about stuffs. They might just jump out at you. That is the cat lesson for this month. Now go away so we can all go catnapping somewhere comfortable! >^..^<

Internet Stuff
Here are the latest DVD films from http://www.NetFlix.com:
Pride & Prejudice takes a family and displays the character, background, and the complete tapestry of life. Two seemingly incompatible people fall in love, not typical of the age. Through the barriers of society and ill-gotten perceptions, two people cannot avoid the other. Memoirs of A Geisha is one of the best love stories this season. The cinematography is excellent, the characters real, and the story superb. This film is a must see for everyone. The Polar Express is an instant classic that brings chills and thrills. The film touches your heart and appeals to your inner child. This is a 5-star, must see movie. Hoodwinked is a slightly different take on Little Red Riding Hood. The movie is an investigation of different stories of the same zany event. Eventually, the frog figures out the whole thing, and everyone is a hero except for the evil critters. The film was delightfully funny. Munich was an intense movie of retribution and unresolved solutions. Those who exacted vengeance on the Munich terrorists could not really become satisfied. They became more like their victims, and the killing just got worse. Nothing seemed resolved at all. Capote was a fine film with extraordinary acting. The look, feel, and sound all served the purpose of focusing on how the novel In Cold Blood affecting everyone, but most especially Truman Capote. Big Momma’s House 2 wasn’t as good as the original as one would suspect, but the film had some very funny moments. As opposed to a lot of reviewers, I liked the movie. I thought the film was worth watching. The DVD extras were not up to par, but a good movie nonetheless. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe was an instant classic. This fantasy film appeals to all alike. There is honor, evil, and good spread across a world of unique characters, most non-human. AeonFlux is an excellent Science Fiction film about a 400 year old love story set against an enclave of humanity at the brink of extinction. It is an unraveling mystery thriller. King Kong, another remake, but this one is passionate and emotional. The film is real, and the action nonstop. The acting is superb. Love is the one constant for all things. Wolf Creek is unique. The scenes build to the anticipated horror. Three young people start out on an Australian journey to Wolf Creek. Then the car won’t start. The typical Dundee character steps out of the truck to help. Back at the lair, things go horribly awry. Cheaper by the Dozen 2 is a funny, family film with twists of Steve Martin, Bonnie Hunt, and way too many kids. The sequel isn’t quite up to the original, but the movie was still entertaining and worth watching.

Poetry Corner
"Including My Love For You Also"
October 29, 1971

Finally, I have time...
Time to write to my son
So far away
I wonder how he feels today...

As I write
Of things he likes to hear
The door bell rings
A telegram from Viet Nam...

I return to finish the letter
I sign it
My last line is:
Including my love for you also...

I break down...
Tears stream down my face
My son had died today
Including my love for you also...
