October 31, 2011 - Florida Keys - L. E. Shaffer: Florida Keys Journal Week in Review. You ready for some overt sarcasm. I know that I am.

Yes, again, Mayor Ginger Snead for mayor, Vice Mayor Dick Ramsay for vice mayor. The council makes that selection at the November 8 meeting. The last Journal Review had the date wrong.

What is best for all of Marathon’s residents is clearly to steer a steady course. Return Mayor Snead to a third term, and return Vice Mayor Ramsay to a second term. Although this is a council decision, they do listen to you. Go to http://www.marathonflorida.org/index.aspx?NID=41 and make your desires known. Read More >>

November 1, 2011 - Florida Keys - James Bell: FIRST NATIONWIDE TEST OF THE EMERGENCY ALERT SYSTEM. Test to Take Place November 9 at 2 p.m. EDT. WASHINGTON, D.C. - On November 9 at 2:00 p.m. eastern standard time, the federal government will conduct the first nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS). The test will last up to three and a half minutes. During this period, regularly scheduled television, radio, cable, and satellite shows will be interrupted as the system is being tested by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), would like to ensure that the public are aware that this event will be just a test, and not a real emergency alert. November 2, 2011 - Marathon - Marilyn Tempest: Sleeping Indoors by Jim Holt. SYNOPSIS: SLEEPING INDOORs  by   JIM HOLT
Paul and Nora are empty nesters who have a comfortable life in a college town where Paul teaches American Literature and writes book reviews.  Nora does volunteer work and adopts cats off the street.  When she invites a homeless person named Dwain for Christmas dinner and an indefinite stay, Paul is not amused.   And when Nora's libidinous sister, Nichole, arrives for dinner, provoking an impromptu romantic encounter with Dwain, things begin to get really complicated.   Paul soon discovers that Dwain is much more than a street person when he reads Dwain's amazing journal that details his life on the road.  Paul and Nora want to publish the journal and get Dwain off the street and into the spotlight, but this idea turns out to be problematic.  As they plan to provide a new and rewarding life for Dwain, Paul and Nora come to realize that what they deem to be success may not be so appealing to a man who has come to value his own life including his anonymity. This is all about giving and receiving, and Christmas spirit resonates throughout this funny and touching story.

ABOUT AUTHOR JIM HOLT:  Mr. Holt has given Marathon Community Theatre (MCT) a Christmas gift.  He has waived royalties for his play in return for our highlighting local services for the homeless.  MCT very much appreciates this gift. Therefore, we are proud to sponsor three local charities that have earned our respect and support because of their devoted community service. They are Independence Cay, KAIR, and Forgotten Felines.  Please visit their volunteers in our lobby to learn more about these organizations, and to find out how you may participate in their mission.

November 4, 2011 - Marathon - Jeri Sears: Regular Near Shore Waters Committee [NSWC] Meeting. I make no guarantees as to the correctness of the following.

The following are my personal notes from the Nov. 3, 2011 NS meeting:

1. Sailing Classes with the Marathon Sailing Club and the Marathon Parks and Rec. Committee - Mike Bier, Paul Koisch, and Judy Rowley from the Marathon Sailing Club attended the meeting. We did not have any representatives from the Marathon Parks and Recs. Committee. NSWC member, Charles Badoian, took over the discussion with the Sailing Club members. We had a very interesting and informative discussion about the possibilities for a sailing club in Marathon. Read More >>

November 7, 2011 - Florida Keys - L. E. Shaffer: Florida Keys Journal Week in Review. Are you ready for some sarcasm? I know you are; here we go.

Marathon City Councilmembers were polled by the Keynoter recently on fire chief candidate Callahan from Monroe County. The question asked is not as important as the violation of Florida’s Sunshine laws. Let one councilmember violate the Sunshine laws, and it is the end of the world. Then why don’t we pursue such violations on any offender. No one is allowed to poll the council, and then publicly post the results. Can you say, “Oops”?

Don’t miss all the fun at the City of Marathon’s annual birthday party November 12 at the Community Park. This year the theme is on family fun. Don’t miss that fun now. Read More >>

November 8, 2011 - Marathon - Max Sears: Another good job of cleaning up Boot Key Harbor!

2 sunken boats were removed through the combined efforts of Richard Tanner - Marina / Ports Director for the City of Marathon and Rich Jones - Monroe County Marine Resources Senior Administrator - who financed the removal through the county.

Keep up the good work!

November 9, 2011 - Florida Keys - Len Matoss: They don't back their products. I purchased a Hi-Tide 16k boat lift in Sept 06, 9 months later I noticed the lift was lifting uneven every time I raised my boat. I called the company that installed the lift and was told they no longer installed Hi-Tide lifts and I should call the company direct. After calling the company and explaining my problem I was told not to worry about it. Keeping in mind that I did not live here full time until the past three years the lift was not used very much. Recently I was standing at the control trying to level the boat and the gear box let go, the 13,000 lb boat came crashing down like an explosion, luckily no one was on the boat or near it when it happened. I called Hi-Tide and they told me my warrantee was up

(by 6 weeks) now and I would have to fix it myself, they also told me the gear box company that they used was no longer in business so I would have to replace both sides at a cost of $1,796.38 plus the cost of installing the new parts. I explained to them that I had called to complain about the un even lifting problem 9 months after the lift was installed but they could have cared less. I am a manufacturing engineer that has owned his own machine shop for 27 years and I knew that the problem was in the gear box when I called the first time but no one seemed to care, and they don't care now either. My advise is to stay away from Hi-Tide boat lifts and their company.

November 12, 2011 - Middle Keys - Gary Roberts: Who Cares? The Last Resort Ministry – Gary L Roberts

As a Florida Realtor with Century 21for many years, there were numerous meetings and seminars to attend. My most memorable one was several years ago at the Sombrero Country Club. The speaker put three questions to us that he said all potential clients or customers were thinking as we attempted to either list or sell a property. Those three questions were: - Who Cares? – So What? – What Difference Does It Make?

Sun Motors - Go Carts Watched go-cart racing between a father and son tourist team today at Sun Motors Marathon Florida Keys. November 14, 2011 - Florida Keys - L. E. Shaffer: Florida Keys Journal Week in Review. Congratulations to Marathon Mayor Pete Worthington and Vice Mayor Dick Ramsay for being elected for the 2012 council. Pete seems to have been around forever, and Dick has been around a long time as well.

Marathon Health Co-Op and Advantage Rehab and Fitness had their grand opening celebration on the 10th. You have to stop by to see the big expansion. They are located at the old Blockbuster.

Happy Veterans Day to all those who served their country, you can spot your heroes easily. They are the quiet, unassuming ones.

Happy 12th birthday to the City of Marathon, I wanted to attend the celebration, as the event is always entertaining and fun. My medical condition prevented me from attending this one, but next year should be another matter. Read More >>

November 16, 2011 - Marathon - Jessica Mintz: This year is almost over and Forgotten Felines is looking back to several great events which took place in 2011, such as our first ever cat adoption event where we found homes for over 12 cats in one day and a total of 28 homes within two weeks. We also had the opportunity to bag groceries at the Marathon Winn Dixie for the first time and would like to thank Walter Eckles and his Winn Dixie staff for giving us the opportunity to bag groceries to help raise funds to cover our cat food expenses.

We plan to have one more adoption event before the year is over and it is set for Saturday, December 17, from 10 am – 2 pm at the Purr-Fect thrift store located across the Marathon City Park. We will have wonderful and loveable cats and kittens available for adoption as well as a bake sale, free hot dogs provided by Centennial Bank and free 3 years rabies vaccinations for cats and dogs offered by Cheap Shots from 1-2 pm.

November 21, 2011 - Florida Keys - L. E. Shaffer: Florida Keys Journal Week in Review. The Key West super boat race is a tragedy costing lives. Yet people come to the event just in case something like this happens; you know you cannot take your eyes off a train wreck.

County Manager Gastesi’s great alliance of all cities and unincorporated Monroe County sharing assets is like fool’s gold. Good luck on getting full representation. One main reason Marathon incorporated was to keep “all” of its revenues. Before, 80% of our property tax dollars disappeared into the county coffers never to benefit Marathon residents. Breakout the fire hoses to hose the participants down, when the “discussion” gets hot.

Just who decided that blue is for boys and pink is for girls? Really, I want to know why. Why did God invent eyebrows? Was God playing some kind of joke? God had more important things to do than paint eyebrows on Adam and Eve. Interesting what if’s though. You got any George Carlin conversations? Read More >>

(The Miami area code is 305.) The contest, which drew more than 650 entries from across the United States, was widely covered by National Public Radio.

A revised and updated second edition of Howland's acclaimed 2009 memoir The Human Drummer: Thoughts on the Life Percussive will be available in 2012 as an e-book. (A 2nd print ed. may follow.) For more information, visit www.halhowland.com and click "Books & recordings." Read More >>

Firefighters Local 4396 Union is Marathon's firefighters and paramedics. Monroe County Teacher's Union could learn a lot from Local 4396 regarding press releases about all the good stuff. Marathon's besieged city staffers could learn to finally stand up for themselves by forming their own union. The Rock Coalition is pro-union as well as other similar communities. Request a ride-along. Now that is a lot of fun, and you even get to learn cool stuff.

November 28, 2011 - Florida Keys - L. E. Shaffer: Florida Keys Journal Week in Review. I am watching yet another debate between 9 or 10 [who knows how many] Republicans. There is that secede Texas man Rick Perry, a woman Republican, and stranger yet a Republican black man. Yes, a Republican black man, I am thrilled about his candidacy. Michele Bachmann represents the Tea Party quite well. Good show, all.

[Rate of Growth Ordinance] ROGOs are here again. Can you believe it? Before the Great Recession, those suckers were very valuable. Transient ROGOs were gold. During those heady times, there was a lot of opposition to new developments. I was one of those who objected to the pace of change.

Well, now, Marathon stands to gain 100 transient ROGOs. Read More >>
